Monash University WIE Student Affinity Group
The Monash University WIE Student Affinity Group is a group of like-minded volunteers who are dedicated to the endorsement and celebration of women in engineering. We aim to empower and inspire females to pursue engineering and other STEM academic interests and career paths. Monash WIE Affinity Group is all about supporting and encouraging each other while sharing ideas and knowledge through our many workshops, seminars, and networking events.
Our Team
Chair – Thanomporn Wittayacharoenpong (Mon)
Mon is the first-year Master by research student at Monash University in the Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, nursing, and health science. She works as Stereo-EEG Research Assistant in the Epilepsy Group at Alfred hospital. Mon graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Engineering in 2015 from Thailand and a Masters of Biomedical Engineering in 2019 from the University of Melbourne. Mon completed an internship as a research student at The Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, where she designed and developed a system to determine the trajectory angle of a cochlear implant electrode during implantation. Her current research looks at the quantitative tools to improve SEEG implantations and SEEG-guided radio-frequency thermo-coagulation outcomes.
Vice-Chair – Sabrina Meikle
Sabrina is a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) and Department of Physiology at Monash University. Her current research focuses on improving the resolution of bionic eyes through artificial electrical stimulation of the visual cortex. She works closely with the Monash Vision Group and the Monash Neurobionics Laboratory. Outside of work, she enjoys bouldering, hiking and board games!
Secretary – Boxuan Zhang (Grace)
Boxuan Zhang (Grace) is a PhD student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University. Her research is about computer vision in neural implicit representation of scenes and navigation problems in robotics. She started her research in Feb 2022, working in the Monash Robotics Lab. She did her undergraduate study at Monash as well, majoring in Mechatronics Engineering. During the last two years of her undergrad study, she joined the Monash Motorsport team, working on the first autonomous Formula Student vehicle of the team and in Australia. This is also where she got inspired and decided to do research in robotics and autonomous driving.
Events Manager – Ethan Grooby
Ethan Grooby is a joint PhD student at Monash University and the University of British Columbia. His research is on newborn cardio-respiratory monitoring using digital stethoscopes and video cameras. Ethan is actively involved in IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) volunteering as Chair of IEEE EMBS Monash University Student Club and International Student Conference Coordinator for IEEE EMBS Student Activities Committee.
Webmaster – Gracie Marconi
Gracie is a third year PhD candidate at Monash University in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She has previously completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering at RMIT University in 2016 and a Master of Advanced Medical Engineering at Monash University in 2019. Gracie is interested in biomedical devices, with a particular interest in assistive and rehabilitative technology which aims to improve the lives of those less abled. Her current research looks at the improvement of powered orthosis for gait assistance and rehabilitation.
