Probleemstelling

Zigbee sensor networks are used in “smart” homes all over the world. They are used to connect relevant sensors and actuators to light systems, HVAC units etc. with the goal of:

  • improve energy usage of units,
  • automate control based on certain feedback of the house (occupancy, air quality …),
  • increase comfort of the user (create certain scenes like movie time lights, sleeping, sport training, …)

The proposed master thesis will consist on first set up a sensor network using several Zigbee sensors and equipment that will be provided. The student will i) explore the capabilities of such a multi sensor network; ii) understand how to expand, secure, increase/guarantee stability; iii) integrate with other eco systems; and iv) understand the commissioning phase vs “day by day” use phase.

Then, the student will investigate the connectivity standard, Matter, on the Zigbee network. Matter is a new standard that aims to promote interoperability by design and security by design between sensors from different vendors. It is a new topic (standard is not officially released in final version). Important players on the market like Nordic, SiLabs already have support in their SDK and have some examples using this new standard. The student will i) explore possibilities of interconnection of Zigbee/Thread sensor networks with Matter capability; ii) derive the limitations of the Matter standard; and iii) understand the capabilities.
