You would think that with all the technical events that the UOB Student Branch organized last year that they’ve run out of ideas but guess what? you thought wrong! The UOB SB came off strong with their first technical workshop of the academic year: A Solar Power Bank Workshop. The event proved to be the event with the largest attendance that the Branch has ever organized within the university’s walls, which was not as surprising seeing that the idea of building a solar power bank that can last you up to 3 days was an attractive idea to many. The event was headed by our beloved Dr. Maamer Talib as a guest speaker who spoke about the mechanisms of building a solar power bank starting from the basics, and down to customizing it with LED lights. The event was very informative and a lot of the attendees showed interest in the concept of solar power and how we can put it to good use to save energy, which in one way or another, was one of the workshop’s objectives.

The exciting part about the workshop however, came last. Dr. Talib announced at the endow the workshop that will be a competition held on the basis of this workshop with prizes and trophies for the winning teams. a huge number of the attendees proceeded to register and put down their contact information to be a part of the competition which was an exciting development to the workshop: going beyond just being a workshop.

By this event, the IEEE UOB Student Branch just wanted to encourage the usage of solar power in everyday aspects in order to help build a more sustainable tomorrow, and with the help of the competition, we would hopefully spread the word.
