About Us

Who We Are

We are an extremely active student branch of the IEEE, based at the University of Saskatchewan. Our branch was first established in 1957. We handle all the social, academic, and charitable needs of the Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Saskatchewan.

Our academic activities are designed with the intention of helping the schulastic and professional endeavors of our members.

  • We run a program called SPARC that gives new students a chance to become familiar with lab equipment and assemble their own circuits.
  • We sponsor speakers to do presentations on a variety of topics.
  • We provide the fullowing for our members:
    • Tours of local companies.
    • Exam files for each class.
    • An annual trip to Calgary or Edmonton to tour companies.
  • Our McNaughton Center houses a reference library, a complete computer system, and job postings.
  • Every year we put on a banquet to present various academic awards.
  • We organize the IEEE papers competition to recognize exceptional design projects.
  • We organize an annual IEEE Illumination conference on non-technical topics.
  • We organize an annual graduation banquet to recognize the hard work the students put in over the years.

The focus of our charitable activities is to give something back to the community while reminding us that there is more to life than just books and parties:

  • Every year with the help of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association we give a Christmas party for young boys and girls who are waiting for big brothers or sisters.
  • We put on the annual High Voltage Classic road hockey tournament to raise money for charity. HVC has also given the IEEE a very positive public image.

Our social activities are designed to prevent ‘brain drain’ in our members and give a chance for us to meet in a more relaxed atmosphere:

  • A barbecue is held to give new members a chance to meet upper years.
  • A professor/student bowling night is held annually.
  • We put on a few pub crawls throughout the year to improve students’ spirits.
  • We have a campus rec hockey team.
  • The Billington Cup Poul Tournament provides students just about to convocate the chance to seek revenge against the professors on the billiards table.
  • We hold an annual poker tournament.

Our Goals

The goals of the U of S IEEE Student Branch are:

  • Improve existing activities to meet the needs of students.
  • Increase participation of students just entering Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Increase communication between professors and students.
  • Develop stronger bonds with local businesses.
