How to Get Involved with IEEE
Author: Mohamed Ashraf Hasabo
IEEE E-JUST SB Chair 2024/025
“IEEE is the trusted voice for engineering, computing, and technology information around the globe.” – Someone important on the IEEE Website.
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. It stands for The “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers” As the name implies it started with being concerned with electrical and electronics engineers in the US and started to grow in the 18s. IEEE’s roots go back to 1884 when electricity began to become a major influence in society. A year after the other IEEE included more and more different engineering fields and geographically included the whole world

As Egypt section we are located according to IEEE in R8, which stands for Region 8+ get used to the abbreviations there are tonnes of them xd, and our region includes mainly Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
As IEEE E-JUST SB, Student Branch, We are one of 80+ SBs in Egypt and we are proudly the biggest SB in Members We won two international awards you can check them out here [Include the link for the awards page]. But in members? Is it members or volunteers? Is there any difference? How is our SB structured in the first place?
Members Vs. Volunteers
IEEE as an international organization has an annual membership plan that provides tonnes of benefits to its members here are some:
- And email at IEEE domain: @ieee.org
- Access to several limited access papers on IEEEXplore for free
- Monthly magazines depending on your interest and subscriptions
- Opportunities to get funded to travel and attend conferences based on your influence on your community and IEEE experience
- Being eligible for leadership positions in the SB such as (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer) as well as for Chapters in the SB, We will talk about chapter later.
The membership for students is 14$ per year starting from January till February of the next year, a little bit over a year. If you bought your membership in October of a year you get the 3 months (October, November, and December) as a bonus on your membership so for example: If you paid in October 2024 you have a membership till February 2026, Wohoo! For our dear graduate students, your membership is 28$, You should be making money by now they suppose, We will talk about the process of paying the membership in detail later in this article.
So that’s the becoming a member part .. what about volunteering?
Volunteering with IEEE
As you noticed when we talked about members we didn’t mention committees such as the Organizing committee, Media, HR, PR, etc that’s because it’s not obligatory for students to be members in order to volunteer for our branch and benefit from the volunteers’ opportunities. We only accept volunteers based on their experience and skills. IEEE E-JUST SB has 2 major recruitment calls one at the beginning of each semester. You can also send your CV to our email anytime and if we are in need of your skills then you will join our team.
Being a member and a volunteer all together gives you the ultimate benefit from your volunteering experience let’s checklist it together by asking ourselves why do we volunteer?
- To gain a network: what about being part of the biggest network worldwide in your field and always in touch with the latest technology internationally by becoming a member as well as locally with your peers by becoming a volunteer? Check
- Mentorship: IEEE offers mentorship programs, which will be covered by articles soon, that can pair you with an expert in your selected field to mentor you for a period of time volunteeringly. In addition to working under the leadership of your SB officers and heads who are for sure are eager to teach you and learn from you as a volunteer. Check
- CV: IEEE is widely recognized around the globe and here in Egypt either by its alumni working there or by the companies dealing with IEEE SBs and Sectionally in Fair and Events. Personally, as IEEE E-JUST SB, we dealt with plenty of international companies and governmental entities that can be found on our website.
- Value to the community: IEEE E-JUST SB focuses on developing its community very much by doing Sessions and workshops for E-JUST students, Training and info sessions for High schoolers, and working on real-life problems to implement solutions and help the local community.
Now as we discussed how to join as a Volunteers let’s do the membership process together.
Step 1:
Go to IEEE membership page at https://www.ieee.org/membership/index.html
Step 2: Join

Step 3: Join as a Student

Step 4: Create an account

Step 5: Fill up your data and press Create an account
Step 6: Enter the verification code sent to you and continue
Step 7: you will find your Membership application open and needs the rest of your data. And if you look on your right you will find your cart with your membership at 27$. Don’t panic it’s just that IEEE doesn’t know you are a student from a developing country let’s fill in the data and continue.

Step 8: Told you

Step 9: The catalog is your marketplace where you can add whatever societies, councils, and affinity groups to your cart to reflect on the sort of opportunities emails you get and for you become eligible for. For example, let’s add some together and start by pressing on the Societies.
Membership section

You can scroll down and down exploring every society IEEE has and what’s for free and what with extra trivial cost but we can search too so may not go for some examples such as the Computer Society(CS), the Communication Society(ComSoc), The robotics and automation society(RAS), The Engineering in Medicin and Biology Society (EMBS) and of course the Industrial Application Society(IAS), I’m an Industrial Engineering Student senior so that’s why, We Will discuss also The affinity groups and how to add them, especially the Women in Engineering (WIE) and the Special Interest group in Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT). Type in Computer and search

Go for the Societies tab and press on “IEEE Computer Society Membership”

As you can see here you can find detailed information about the Society membership and what to get from it and the price for Student members, Members, and Non-Members.

It’s 4$ not 8$ as I told you the prices that apply to you only show when you add it to your cart

Let us try that with the rest of the Societies and Affinity groups we mentioned ComSoc, RAS, EMBS, IAS, WIE, and SIGHT following the same procedures as we did with CS. In case you face a choosing question on any society page such as the EMBS asking for Essential or Preferred membership you can go with the Essential choice as it’s the cheapest and you don’t need the preferred.

These were the prices and let’s press continue and go forward with our application. Note: You can search councils in the catalog and add as much as you want as most of them are free and they provide insightful pieces of information and updates about their perspective fields.
Step 10: Confirm your cart and proceed to payment
Step 11: you can do your normal process of payment for an international subscription if you are familiar with it or have a PayPal. If not then read these non-IEEE instructions carefully. As we are in Egypt our normal Debit cards don’t pay anything in dollars in or outside of egypt. The only channel available is via a Dollar Account or through a Credit Card. See online resources for the differences and how to get one but as we are all in IEEE and want to help each other you can ask the “All Volunteers” group for help from someone who has a credit card and you had him/her the account to pay for you and then change the password.
Step 12: Congratulations! After payment and order confirmation, you are now an IEEE member with a membership ID shown on your screen that you are going to need it a lot in the future.
Now how to get my @ieee.org email and shift all my received emails from IEEE to it
Now as an ieee member, you can go to the IEEE membership site and sign in if you are not

Then go to your profile by pressing on your name on the top right and from there press on Membership Information

Then Google Apps

You now may activate it I’m sure you will figure it out but eventually, it will look like this.

The next step is going back to your IEEE account settings and to Profile this time and choose your email address and Passwords.

Here you can change your primary email from now on to your IEEE email as the Primary email

Conclusion
I hope by now you are an IEEE member filled with ambition to learn and explore the new “Worlds” of IEEE, Especially since it was such a long article to write. Thank you for your interest in being an IEEE member and don’t forget being a member doesn’t guarantee you will be a volunteer in the S you gonna need to apply for your position of interest. Still, after all an IEEE membership is so handy that you might not need to volunteer in the SB cause you can find an email from a society you are a member in asking for volunteers and before you know it you are volunteering globally.
