When we want to create and manage a website, we often hear terms such as hosting, server, and domain. Then what is the differences between hosting, server and domain?

HOSTING

Hosting is a place to store data on the website. A hosting is stored on a server. Even though they both accommodate data, the difference between hosting and server is that the server has a hard disk, RAM and processor, whose shape and size are adjusted to be stored on a server rack. Server hosting is a place to store data, where later the server will display the data on web clients (browsers) such as Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, and Opera.

There are several types of hosting, two of which are shared hosting and cloud hosting:

  • Shared hosting is a type of hosting at an affordable price that is used by several websites at once. This means that the hosting used is on a server that is also used by other people, so the speed of the website is divided by other users.
  • Cloud hosting is a hosting service that is stored on a server and connected via the internet. Therefore, the number of servers used can be more than one server so that when a problem occurs, another server connected to the internet can be a temporary backup until the problem is resolved.

Broadly speaking, hosting services provide data storage services that will later be used for a website, such as data in the form of text, video, audio, images, files and others.

SERVER

Server is a computer system that provides certain services in a computer network. Its function is to perform software functions that control access to the network and the resources contained therein.

Servers must always be stored in a data center that is supported by complete facilities so that the server machine can work optimally when accessed from all over the world and is not easily damaged so that it can last a long time.

Broadly speaking, the server will work when there is a request from the client. The client in question is an individual when accessing the internet through a browser. When we use the internet, inevitably we also need website access. After that, the server will send the information according to what it is looking for.

DOMAIN

Domain is a name that has been determined and regulated by a domain name management body. In Indonesia, domain names are regulated by the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager (PANDI).

If the website is like a house, then the domain is the home address that replaces the “geographical location” of the house which in this context replaces the IP address (IP address). A domain name cannot be purchased, it can only be rented and must be renewed annually.
