August 28, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm IST

Title:An Introductory Journey to “Space Physics and Aeronomy”
Speaker: Dr. Deepak Karan (LASP, University of Colorado Boulder)

Date and Time: 28-Aug-2021,19:30-20:30 IST

“Many of us hate summer. It’s so hot; the temperature often reaches to 50 deg. C. We wish the temperature to be below and the weather to be pleasant. Have you ever thought, “Are these rays all that is coming from the Sun?”. The answer is “No”. Sun also emits high energetic particles, Gamma rays, X-rays, and Ultra Violet rays which can create an enormous amount of heat. What would have happened to Earth and to us if all those particles and rays have reached us? …!! The Earth has its own magnetic field like a cage that deviates from the high energy particles and protects us. The upper atmosphere of Earth absorbs the high energetic rays and gets ionized to form the ionosphere. The ionosphere is essential for communication purposes. It is interesting to think that, unlike rain, lightning, thunder, and cyclone that we experience in this lower atmosphere, what kind of physical processes might be occurring in the upper atmosphere? How crucial are those for our survival? Do we have any future threats? For decades researchers/scientists have been carrying out investigations to understand these processes. With the advancement of science and technologies, it is now possible to know detailed information on these. Still, many questions are unanswered/unknown. Innovative tools, ideas, and understanding are welcomed. In my talk, I will try to introduce this science field and leave it up to you to explore your interests in it.”
