Abstract of the Talk:

This talk will give an overview to some of the key challenges that will drive the development of transmitters in emerging mobile communication and radar systems. Massive multi-antenna transmitter architectures and large signal bandwidths will be key technology ingredients to facilitate the dramatic improvements in capacity, energy efficiency and flexibility needed.

As we will discuss in this talk, this paradigm shift will force us to revisit the fundamental linearity and efficiency trade-offs that typically dictate the design of transmitters in general and power amplifiers in particular. Promising power amplifier circuit and transmitter architectures will therefore be reviewed in the context of emerging mobile communication requirements.

Further challenges arise when these transmitter circuits are implemented as part of a low-cost highly integrated multi-antenna design. We will present a system simulation framework that enables an accurate prediction and understanding of the joint nonlinear effects of circuit-, antenna-, and thermal design. Different phased array and massive MIMO transmitter examples will illustrate typical applications and the importance of co-design in highly integrated transmitters. This also includes initial test-bed experiments on distributed massive MIMO, which is a promising technique for increased performance in future wireless systems.
