- Lisa Su is the current CEO of the semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
- She is the first woman to become the CEO of AMD.
She is known for her works in the fields such as Semiconductors On Insulators (SOI) technology.
She did her BS in Electrical Engineering at MIT and pursued to do MS and did PhD in SOI technology.
- It is a technology to fabricate silicon transistors over another layer of silicon transistors with an insulating medium between the two layers of silicon. This would help in reducing the size and increasing the performance of the devices.
- After completing her PhD in 1994, she joined Texas Instruments. There she worked on and devised a technique to utilize copper in semiconductor connections instead of aluminium. This resulted in 20% faster operating devices.
She also served as the director in the R&D department of IBM in 2000s and also started her own semiconductor company.
She joined AMD in the year 2012 and in the year 2014 AMD announced her as its new CEO. At that time, AMD had very worse market shares and the company was at the brink of bankruptcy.
With decades of experience in the field of semiconductors, Lisa Su along with other directors devised a plan to bring back the company to its form.
- They focused on manufacturing CPUs and other Semiconductors for high performance computing such as gaming and hosting data centres. As a result, they launched their Ryzen CPUs based on Zen architecture in 2017. This surged their CPU market share to about 11%.
And currently, she is the CEO of AMD and also serves as directors for companies such as Cisco Inc, Analog Devices.
