The IEEE EMBS Bangalore Chapter in association with IEEE EMBS MSRIT Student Chapter is organizing a One day workshop on Patient Specific Implant Design Using 3D Scan data on 20 November 2014 at Department of Medical Electronics, MSRIT,Bangalore.

This workshop is designed for students/professionals interested in
understanding and learning more about the use of 3D scan data and finite element analysis in biomechanics, NDE, materiacharacterisation and other applications. This course is designed by experienced industry professionals and thus provides a unique opportunity for students/ professionals to learn about 3D Scan data processing and concepts of finite element modelling and simulations. Students will get hands on experience of current design and simulation software tools used in the industry.

Manoj Gowda:

Research and Development Engineer(Image Processing)
Manoj has extensive experience in algorithm and software development for 3D medical image processing and analysis. He has been working with VOLMO India since last two years and developed innovative algorithm for threshold based image painting. Manoj is currently working on advance automatic Image Segmentation techniques for Finite Element Model development. He has three publications in Image Processing.

Shani Jain:

CAE Engineer
Shani has considerable experience in converting 3D scan data into robust and accurate CAD/STL and finite element models. Shani has been working with VOLMO India since last three years and has developed full Male/Female human body models from CT/MRI data sets.
Shani has also worked on patient specific hip implant design and optimisation. Shani is currently working on creating finite element
models from digital.

Objective of this training program
MATLAB® is high level technical computing software that has been widely in use among engineering community. It took vital place in many engineering course syllabus, particularly in Electrical and Electronics branches. Many researchers/academic faculty and students, who works with large data set, find them difficult to optimize their code to speed up their computing time in Image Processing, Neural Network & Meteorology Data Set, Seismography Data Set and many more applications. The objective of Parallel Computing workshop is to enable the participants to undergo hands-on experience in improving the performance of their code by speeding up the computing time by Task-parallel programming and Data-parallel programming techniques. Also, this workshop emphasis on parallel computations in batch environment by decomposing a problem and partitioning input by splitting the large data sets across multiple instances of MATLAB®.

The workshop is open to academic staff and students of all engineering disciplines and the interested persons from the industry.

Abstract of the talk:

INTRODUCTION TO REHABILITATION FUNDAMENTALS: WHEELED MOBILITY AND SEATING

Mobility Assistive Technology (MAT) devices have the potential to provide unprecedented levels of independent living for a growing population of people with physical and sensory disabilities. MAT can vastly improve functional levels and quality of life. Several research studies highlight the fact that most people who require Mobility Assistive Technology (MAT) do not receive one and those who do receive, do so without a proper evaluation to ensure it appropriately meets their needs. This can lead to abandonment of the device and/or development of secondary health complications including pressure sores, postural deformities such as pelvic obliquity and scoliosis among many others.

Service delivery is a key component in providing appropriate MAT that meets the physical, functional and environmental needs of a user. When faced with the clinical decision of recommending an appropriate seating system, it is important to understand that Assistive Technology (AT) for seating and positioning for a person with a physical impairment can vary according to the individual’s needs and the severity of the medical diagnosis, the injury as well as physical residual recovery following a traumatic event. The seating system involves a combination and selection of appropriate seat components, includes cushion, backrest and lower extremity support, contribute to a stable support for the pelvis to enhance trunk balance and upper trunk mobility. This presentation provides an introduction to multiple areas of wheeled mobility and Seating fundamentals.
