RECRUITMENT DRIVE 2018

The Recruitment Drive was conducted as a part of schedule of events by IEEE RAS student Chapter VIT Chennai. The main Aim of this drive was to get to know the students across all streams who are interested to join IEEE RAS VIT Chennai Student chapter.

It was conducted on September 11 and 12 2018. The interested students were asked a questionnaire before they were all called upon to be interviewed by the core committee members. We received around 40 responses from various years of study across all branches. The students showed extreme interest towards the field of robotics and automation, the students were interviewed and were selected based on their keenness to peruse robotics or automaton as their future field of interest. The students were then given a walkthrough on how to enroll themselves under VIT Chennai IEEE RAS chapter.

DEMO ON IOT IN ROBOTICS

A interactive Demo session on “IoT in Robotics was conducted by the IEEE RAS , VIT Chennai Student Chapter as a part of it regular activities. It was held on December 19,2018 at VIT Chennai Campus.

The session was handles by industry expert Ms.Vasanthi from SANDS India Private LTD.

The session showed an immense support by the students of VIT Chennai who are interested to pursue Robotics and Automation as their future stream of studies.

The session covered a new mix of two broad aspect of technology megatrend likely IoT and Robotics. IoT is the biggest thing happening right now in the industrial world. It along with robotics is an important stream of interest for researchers all over the world.

The session started by an introductory session by our esteemed faculty coordinator Dr. Suchetha M by giving a brief intro about IEEE and IEEE RAS society. Then the resource person of the day took over. The topics covered were, what is robotics, why robotics, what is IoT, why are people preferring IoT, advancements of combination of Robotics and IoT, introduction to Microcontrollers likely AVR,8051, programming them using assembly and C level codes using IDE for the control system of a robot, introduction to IoT servers and clouds, protocols followed in IoT, live demo of controlling an automated bot using remote access from an IoT platform, control of a 3 DOF robotic arm using IoT.

The session concluded by the students asking doubts related to the topics covered in the session and the felicitation of the resource person by the faculty coordinators.

Research 101

IEEE RAS VIT Chennai Student Chapter strives hard to encourage fervent young minds to take up research as a crucial part in the field of Robotics and Automation.

Mr. Rishab Raj, Alumni of VIT Chennai and Project lead – Qualcomm is inordinately noted for his research publications.

He was invited to an interactive session with the members of the society. He shared his conversance with the college, how he strived to achieve his feats by doing research and how those shaped his life.

When the second and the third-year students had ambiguities in engaging in research and academics concomitantly he soothed them by providing a set of tactics. He was astoundingly forbearing while answering questions and gave equal importance to all of them.

It was a knowledge building session for all the members of the society.

The session ended with a positive note by the venerable Alumni spurring the young minds to pursue research with dedication.

Inauguration of 2019-2020 Activities

Shortly after the commencement of another academic year the inaugration of the IEEE club for the year 2019-20 was held triumphantly on the 24th of July. It was a prelude to the IEEE RAS for the fresh minds who have set their hearts on the automation society. The salutatory address was given by the faculty incharge, Dr. Suchetha M who stated the aim of the society and the copious perquisites of being a member of the society.

Then the senior members of the club namely, Mr. Adithyaa ( Head of Operations ) and Mr. Abbas ( Head of Research) intrigued the students by holding forth on the specific technical aspects of the club and how they availed themselves of the opportunities bestowed on them here. Later, Mr. Ganesh Teja and Mr. Yashwanth Reddy also brought out their acquaintance with the society.

Eventually the Head of Event Management, Mr. Muthu perorated with the activities and projects planned for that academic year. The function ended victoriously with tremendous response from the students that over 110 ardent minds were provoked to be a part of the journey with IEEE RAS!

Technical Talk : Sensors and Mechanical Overview in Robotics

Design and sensing are the two most important aspects to be focused on by an innovative developer in the field of robotics. By way of sating this requirement, we, the IEEE RAS VIT Chennai Student Chapter had our first technical talk on Sensors and a Mechanical Overview in robotics.
The session was delivered by the Head of Event Management, Mr. AL. Muthuveerappan. He touched on the fundamentals of every concept in sensors and actuators and also dealt with the mechanical aspects involved in Robotics. Different types of sensors were introduced to the students and the specific cases for the usage of each of them were elaborately discussed. The mechanical aspects discussed were as to how the design of the robot must be framed, on what basis the materials must be chosen, among others.
That was followed by a talk from the Chairman, Mr. S. Siva Shankar. He started by disabusing the audience of the stigma on IEEE and robotics that it was beneficial for only a select group of people and emphasized that it is in fact, a multidisciplinary area. He then shed some light on the very basics of what goes into research and development of a new patentable product that helps mankind sustain life easier. After this, he had an interactive question & answer session with those enthusiastic about this field. Moving on, a short discussion was held on the upcoming events and competitions that we could conduct and participate in to expand our vista.

The event had a turnover of 105 avid minds from a multitude of engineering disciplines and years of study. Overall, the session received tremendous feedback from the students and was an eye opener in many ways to them.

BOOTCAMP ON ROAD TO MICROCONTROLLERS

Automation is going to be the next big thing happening in the field of Robotics. For automation the basic 101 concepts that the young aspiring mind’s must be well informed is about Microcontrollers. By way of sating this requirement, we, the IEEE RAS VIT Chennai Student Chapter had a bootcamp titled as Road to Microcontrollers.

We wanted to bridge the gap, between the ideas in the mind of members with what happens in the real word at an application level.

Before the session Our Faculty Coordinator Dr. Suchetha M gave a short introduction speech about the session and announced that the Vice chair Mr. Tamil Selvan G will be taking the bootcamp.

The talk covered various aspects on what a microcontroller is and what is meant by a development board. Then a brief introduction was given on what is Arduino Development board, the advantages of it, the various models of it available in commercial market and significance of each of them. Then a detailed description was given on ATMEGA 328 , the chip on Arduino Uno board.

Then a step by step demo was showed how to run a basic code on Arduino Board. It covered the basics of how to connect an board to your PC. How to get the serial port associated with it, working around with the Arduino IDE , compiling the code , interpreting the error messages and how to code using the basic API associated with it. They were introduced to the basic electrical representations like resistor and LED.

To wrap it up the session concluded with a wide range of application that can be implemented with Arduino  Development Board.

At the end there was an interactive Q&A Session where the young minds interacted and got their doubts cleared. The event was a successful one with around 80 enthusiastic minds from various disciplines of engineering.
