About

Astronova is the Astronomy Club at the University of Calcutta in collaboration with IEEE Societies and Student Branch Chapters at the University of Calcutta. We organize events in the domain of Astrophotonics, Radio Astronomy, Astronomical Instrumentation, Space Sciences and Astronomy In general.

Astronomy demands workforce from almost every aspect of Engineering and the Sciences. Parallelly there is a growing group of students with their interests in this field, who want to get involved in the study of our universe. This club is a direct product of that strong interest. Our club work is propelled with direct advice and workforce from Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics (IRPE), University of Calcutta and runs collaboration with IEEE Calcutta University Student Brach Chapters, IEEE Photonics Society Calcutta University Student Branch, IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society Calcutta University Student Branch and many more to join us soon. We have also run collaboration with Sky-Watchers Association-Kolkata.

Our activities include:

1. Astronomy Sundays –

We invite eminent scientists, academicians and industry professionals to give talks in online mode to illuminate us on the advances and cutting-edge research in the field. The domains in which we have organized talks to date are named as: Astrophotonics Recent Trends, Radio Astronomy Recent Trends, High Energy Astronomy (X-ray, Gamma-ray astronomy), Advances in Astronomical Instrumentation and lastly ‘Pop Talks’ (where we engage the audience venturing into popular topics in astronomy, being more on the entertainment side)

2. Sky Watching Sessions –

We organize Sky watching sessions for all, to gaze into the night sky. On this event we have collaborated with Sky Watcher’s Association Kolkata (SWA-Kol), Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta previously.

3. Competitions –

Various presentations, project work demonstration-based competition for the students to brainstorm!
