IEEE and EWB talk event: Future of Our Cities

Wednesday 5th March sees an exciting talk event brought to you by the IEEE and EWB Cambridge student branches!

How will our cities look like in 10, 20 or even 50 years from now? Will we be closer to a futuristic looking utopian paradise or a smog filled industrial dystopia?

We have invited 2 prestigious speakers to give us a glimpse of the future:

  1. Dr Jennifer Schooling, Director of Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction, former Research Business Manager at ARUP and an expert on civil infrastructure, will shed light on the emerging Smart Cities.
  2. Dr Andy Stanford-Clark, FBCS., IBM Distinguished Engineer, IBM Master Inventor and a visiting professor at Newcastle University, will explore the interconnectivity of the future and the Internet of Things.

The event will start at 6pm in The Queen’s Building at Emmanuel College.

For enquiries, please contact: ieee-info@srcf.net or cambridge@ewb-uk.org

BT research lab tour: 6th March

The student branch is organising a tour of BT’s research labs on the 6th of March, in collaboration with the IET. In addition to the tour, transport will be provided to and from the labs, free of charge.

More details will be posted soon, but if you’re interested in attending, please let us know by emailing ieee-info@srcf.net

  • Haining Yang: Holographic Wavelength Selective Switches Based on Liquid Crystal on Silicon Technology.
  • Pawan Kumar Shrestha: High Resolution Optically Addressed Spatial Light Modulator based on nanoparticles for 3D Display.
  • Fabien Massabuau: Gallium nitride light emitters: the challenge of general lighting.
  • Ailin Zhang: The playability of bowed string instruments.
  • Matthew Ireland: Laser micromachining of electrothermal compliant actuators.
  • Yunuen Montelongo: Braking diffraction limits with plasmonics.
  • Sohab Sarfraz: A High Temperature Multi Mechanism Gas Sensing Platform Using SOI CMOS MEMS Technology.
  • Iila J. Li: Polyhedral Mechanisms.
  • Yulia Ievskaya: Potential and limitations of state-of-the-art photovoltaic technology.

This will be the first major event of the Cambridge IEEE student branch. Come along to meet the committee and chat to the speakers about their respective topics!

Student branch paper competition

The student branch is now accepting paper submissions for the IEEE Region 8 student paper contest 2014. It is open to all undergraduates, and we shall select the best paper submitted by 28th November the best as Cambridge’s submission to the regional contest.

An international jury will grade the written papers sent by Student Branches to the Regional contest without knowledge of the identity of the authors and of their school, and will decide which papers will be accepted for presentation at the Regional Oral Finals. All finalists will be invited and financially supported to present their papers at IEEE R8 MELECON 2014 Conference, 13-16 April 2014, Beirut, Lebanon. The papers will be published within MELECON 2014 Conference Proceedings and included in IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Three best finalists will get prizes from the IEEE Life Member Fund.
