Industry and Legal Challenges in Implementation of IoT

The IEEE Northumbria Student Branch, the Northumbria IET On Campus Group and IET Northumbria Local Network  jointly organised a workshop titled “The industrial and legal challenges in the implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT)” on Monday 25th of September at Great Hall at Sutherland Building.

The event consisted of two technical talks given by Mr. Nagu Gopalakrisnan and Dr. Guido Noto La Diega, on the basics of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the legal implications for us as customers respectively.

The first speaker Mr. Gopalakrishnan is the Head of Automation Products at TATA Elxsi delivered a talk titled “Internet of Every Things: Opportunity and Legal Challenges”. He discussed how smart products have evolved through the years and we as customers share our private information by connecting our devices to the internet.

The second speaker, Dr. Guido Noto La Diega, Lecturer from the Law School at Northumbria University, shared his expertise on the legal issues associated with the Internet of Things. As a legal counsel to start-ups in the UK and Italy on the IoT, Dr. Noto La Diega presented the risks associated with IoT, and key aspects of the laws tailored to the IoT that the costumers must have in mind.

The presentations concluded with an intellectual exchange between the speakers and attendees, in which several situations related to the smart products we use in our day to day life and where to draw the limit of the access to our private information we give our products which ultimately reaches their manufacturers.

Finally, the organisers invited the attendees to continue to interact with the speakers as well as to each other during the networking lunch. The event was successful with high attendance rate with above 40 delegates, it was well received and obtained great feedback.
