Event Review: UoB IEEE Student Branch Annual General Meeting
The University of Birmingham IEEE Student Branch (PES Chapter) had their Annual General Meeting on 1st February 2023 from 4–5:30 pm (GMT) at University of Birmingham. The event was attended by 30 participants, including 5 academic staff.
After the welcome and event opening announcement, Dr. Nan Chen, the student branch Chair, gave an annual report of the student branch in 2022, including introducing the student branch, the student activities, a financial and statistics review, and the future plan.
The second session of meeting was the officer election. All the candidates are invited to give a brief introduction to themselves and introduce their future plan when taking the responsibilities of the new role. The newly elected committee members for 2023-2024 were then elected by a vote, with results as shown below:
- Chair: Mr Rabee Jibrin
- Vice-Chair: Mr Zixuan Jia
- Secretary: Miss Yixin Li
- Women in Power Officer: Miss Xin Ma
- Treasurer and Publicity Officer: Mr David Li
- Event Coordinator: Mr Shuailong Dai
- Webmaster: Mr Chengyi Wu
Subsequently, Prof Xiao-Ping Zhang, the counselor of student branch and the Professor of the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham, gave a presentation about the history of the student branch and the EPS (Electrical Power System) Masters program, which have been complementary. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the student branch, so Prof. Zhang introduced the success of the student branch in the past ten years as well.
As one of the founding committee members, Dr Jianing Li, the past advisor of the UoB IEEE Student Branch PES Chapter, shared his inspiring experience of establishing the student branch with the help and support of Prof. Zhang, as well as the benefit he received by joining and operating the student branch.
Before the event closure, Dr Daniel Donaldson, the past-chair and the current advisor of the UoB IEEE Student Branch PES Chapter, summed up the meeting and gave an encouraging speech, motivating the student branch to continue to work hard and achieve better in the new year.
In the end, Prof Zhang presented the 2022 IEEE Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award to our student branch, followed by a networking session with the refreshments sponsored by the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham.
