Constitution of the Cork IEEE Student Branch

1 General

1.1 The title of this society shall be Cork IEEE Student Branch. 

1.2 The aim of the Society is: 

  • to provide undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in the Electrical and Electronics or related engineering professions with opportunities for educational, technical and professional development 
  • to provide an informal environment where students can meet with other students and professionals to build their professional network and create meaningful connections.  
  • to further the academic interests and the learning, with a variety of events of high quality and relevance for all who are interested  
  • to encourage students to be proactive and take the responsibility, promoting the process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge on technologies and sciences. 

1.3 The objectives of the Society are to organise:

  • Conferences and seminars on selected topics  
  • Technical talks  
  • Networking events  
  • Industry visits to local companies  
  • Participation in IEEE events and competitions  
  • Social events for students. 

1.4 Membership will be contingent upon a proof of membership of the IEEE. Any IEEE members who are students in UCC or MTU may join the society as volunteers on the committee or to take a named “staff” role in the committee. Society events will in general be open to everyone. SB members will receive an appropriate discount to any events that must be paid for. Non-members will pay the full fee. Specific events may be limited to SB members.

2 The Committee

2.1 The committee (staff) shall be elected from the Student Branch Volunteers by relative majority of those voting. 

  • Chairperson  
  • Vice Chairperson 
  • Finance Officer 
  • Secretary 
  • Public Relations Officer 

As needed, roles may be added or removed during a general meeting of the existing committee staff. 

3 Election of Officials

3.1 The staff that leads the group is elected at a general meeting by a relative majority of those voting. 

3.2 Anyone who holds a named role on the committee may step down from their role at any time. They must notify the other staff of this. If a role becomes available, a new SB member should be elected for the role at the next SB meeting. 

3.3 The group may vote a motion of no confidence in the staff, removing them from office; this no-confidence must be constructive, individually naming the persons who will hold office thereafter. 

4 Duties of Officials

4.1 Meetings shall be called regularly by the chairperson at least one week in advance and shall be open to all members.  

4.2 The chairperson shall have the authority to establish an agenda. Any SB member may request for an item to be added to the agenda. 

4.3 The Secretary shall maintain a record of the meetings and deal with any correspondence and other administrative duties. 

4.4 The Treasurer shall control all finances of the SB. 

4.5 The Public Relations Officer will be responsible for the maintenance the SB social media and website.  

4.6 Anyone who is part of the SB is considered a volunteer and may aid the committee in task, as assigned by the committee staff. 

5 Meetings

5.1 Committee meetings shall be held when deemed necessary by the Committee. 

5.2 The Secretary shall give at least one week notice of any meeting. 

6 Interpretation of the Constitution

6.1 The Chairperson shall rule on the meaning of the constitution whenever any dispute arises. This may be overruled by a simple majority vote at a general meeting. 

6.2 These rules must be approved unanimously by the newly elected staff, possibly after they have made any change they deem appropriate.  

6.3 The SB rules may be changed at any time with good reason. Any changes must be approved by a relative majority of the committee.  

6.4 For the purposes of this branch, the committee are all members listed by name in the Student Branch Staff list.
