Title: Active and Passive Imaging Strategies for Therapeutic Ultrasound Guidance

Abstract: Ultrasound is both a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic modality. Histotripsy is an emerging non-invasive ablation approach that exploits the mechanical bioeffects of high-pressure ultrasound pulses. Promoting the safety and efficacy of this therapy is essential for its clinical translation and adoption. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to develop image guidance techniques for guiding therapy. Specifically, I will describe a nonlinear imaging approach based on chirp-coded excitation and Volterra filtering for visualizing the ablation region. Next, I will discuss a passive imaging approach using nonlinear beamformers for localizing the ablation region and an optical sensing method to guide therapy. I will conclude with a discussion of the advantages and challenges associated with the approaches presented.
