An intelligent artificial pancreas

Our body gets energy from the food that we consume. The food we consume is broken down into glucose and from that energy is obtained. When there is excess of glucose, it is stored in muscles and fat cells, utilized when there is a demand.

Our body does this automatically without any intervention. An organ, pancreas is responsible for regulating the blood glucose level. It secretes two hormones namely, Insulin and Glucagon. Insulin lowers the blood glucose levels and Glucagon increases the blood glucose levels. Thus, maintaining the blood glucose level to a rate of 70-180 mg/dL. When our body fails to do this automatically, we encounter diabetes.

The controller comes loaded with a control algorithm that predicts the blood glucose levels and injects required amount of insulin. When the person is eating, they can press the button “I am Eating” and then enter the calories of the food they consume which may help predict the glucose level much better. Also, they can press “I am Exercising” button when they exercise so the device stops injecting insulin in the blood. The next step is to take it design a fully autonomous device that will be placed within our body.
