Venue: MSRIT,Bangalore, India
The IEEE EMB Bangalore Chapter in association with EMBS MSRIT Student Chapter have organized Distinguished Lecture Program (DLP) TALK on 12th February at M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology(MSRIT),Bangalore. The Guests of Honor for this event were Dr. Prashant K.Sharmaof University Medical Center Groningen, Netherlands and Dr. Dieter Lukoschus of University of Applied Sciences, Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Dr. S. Y. Kulkarni, Principal, MSRIT, Dr. N. Sriraam, HoD, Medical Electronics, MSRIT and Mr. Mukund Rao, Professor Emeritus, Medical Electronics welcomed the Guests of Honor. DISTINGUISHED LECTURE PROGRAM ON SOLAR COOLING TECHNOLOGY by Dr. Dieter Lukoschus Dr. Lukoschus enlightened the audience about energy and its importance over the years and also the present day energy needs. He explained how tapping energy from various resources possible is the key to solve the global energy crisis. He discussed why the challenge of energy flow of Centralized Power Plant was a major problem to be solved in the field of Thermodynamics. He explained the characteristics of Centralized Power Plants. He discussed its advantages which included economy of scale, implementation of latest technology and disadvantages also which included spacious distribution grid requirements. He cited innovative solutions such as conversion of waste heat into cooling energy as the key to curb energy crisis. He explained how extremely compact heat exchangers reduce the physical dimensions compared to conventional shell and tube versions. Advantages of cold from heat technology which included high electric power savings upto 90% and practical maintenance fee. Concepts of different types of heat sources such as solar thermal energy plant, combined heat and power plant, geothermal energy and waste heat were discussed. System components in Biogas plant, off grid solutions and power cuts and few project examples were discussed. DISTINGUISHED LECTURE PROGRAM ON BIOLUBRICATION AND ITS MODIFICATIONS- A BIOMATERIALS CHALLENGE by Dr. Prashant K.Sharma. Dr. Sharma briefed the participants about relative motions in human body mechanics. He also briefed about synovial fluid, cartilages, meniscus in knee joint, saliva in mouth and tears in eyes. He also discussed biofluids such as saliva and synovial fluids in detail. Concepts of Stribeck curve and lubrication regimes were also discussed. He explained techniques such as Quartz cystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and colloidal probe atomic force microscope. He briefed the participants about glandular saliva and their SCR and conclusions of various experiments were explained. CULTURAL PROGRAM by Medical Electronic Students, MSRIT. Ms. Pruthvi Lakshmi of pre-final year presented a devotional song and a Bharatnatyam dance to the audience. Ms. AnarghyaKini of 2nd year presented a devotional song. Ms. Amulya, Ms. Pooja C.S, Ms. Manjushree and Ms. Supraja B presented the audience a traditional dance performance. The Guests of Honor and Principal handed over tokens of appreciation to the performers. The culturals was followed by Dinner. The participants interacted with speakers and asked thought provoking questions which kept the audience engaged. The students could got an insight into the various sub-domains in the vast fields of Biomaterials and Biomechanics and also wish to incorporate them into projects in the future.
