IEEE EMB Bangalore Chapter, IEEE EMBS MSRIT Student Chapter in association with IEEE Bangalore Section organized Distinguished Lecture Program(DLP) Talk on “Smart phone Imaging of the Eye” on 22nd April at M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology(MSRIT), Bangalore. Dr. Mahesh Shanmugham, Head, Vitreoretinal & Ocular Oncology Services, Sankara Eye Hospitals, Bangalore, India delivered the lecture. Dr Sriraam,Chair,EMB Bangalore Chapter welcomed the guest of honor as well as other audience for this talk.

Dr. Mahesh gave an overview on the structure of eyes, its anatomy and the clinical procedure that is being carried out in a typical hospital environment . Dr. Mahesh shared his published research articles and also briefed the concept of retinal imaging and its importance. He also highlighted the typical imaging techniques used in ophthalmology, which includes slit lamps, surgical video recordings, fundus imaging options like fundus camera and video indirect ophthalmoscope. He explained each technique’s advantages and disadvantages along with a measure of their costs.

Dr. Mahesh addressed certain key issues like how a digital camera or a smart-phone can replace costly diagnostic devices if used with proper techniques. He illustrated their effectiveness using various images and videos taken during his research. He explained few issues with smart phone used as a direct ophthalmoscope which included uncontrollable LED light intensity, low level illumination to view retina and non-focused LED flash beams during imaging of the eye. He also explained the benefits and limitations of direct ophthalmoscope. He stressed on its limitations which included that no recording was available and that it is a monoocular instrument. He also asked the audience to ponder about the issues faced during examination using this device. He explained the concept of Contact Retinal Imaging in brief.

The DLP talk was well attended by 168 participants from academics ( both Engineering and Medical), industries, doctors and general public. During the Q&A, Dr Shanmugam shared his views as well challenges towards incorporating the mobile based evaluation of eye imaging. The forum gave an wonderful opportunity for the audience and showed the path for bridging the gap between the medical and engineering domains.
