2014 Arduino Workshop

0001SW

This workshop will help participants to explore the Arduino kit, provides an opportunity for participants to apply concepts of basic electronic theory in interesting ways, and without strict monitoring. Indirectly, this method will provide a space for participants to gain the mind of the creative ideas that they can, through their daily work, tests and learning their theory.

The Arduino workshop was targeted for 25 undergraduate students at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This workshop was held over two days, to provide more time for participants to adapt to the new information learned. In addition, each participant was provided with one Arduino kit during the two-day workshop and they have an option to purchase it after the training. Mr Radin Yusof Radin Sadi conducted the workshop where he had an experience using the Arduino kit for his final year project at UPM. He won the 2014 IEEE CAS (M) Innovative Award and bagged a silver award during the International Innovation Festival (INNOFEST) 2014 for his project entitled “Smart Home Energy Monitoring System”. He is now working as engineer at RSF Engineering Services.

The effectiveness of this workshop was evaluated through a competition held at the end of the training session. The participants were asked to produce one of the most creative design by applying the knowledge gained from the workshop.

UPM Students to Compete in IEEEXtreme Worldwide Programming Competition

Prize-Winning Team to attend one of IEEE’s Global Conferences.

Undergraduate and graduate computer programming students are gearing up to compete for the rights to call themselves the “world’s best programmers” – and a free trip to one of hundreds of IEEE technical worldwide conferences — during the upcoming programming competition, IEEEXtreme 8.0. The eighth annual worldwide college programming competition involves teams of IEEE student members working collaboratively to solve a series of challenging programming problems. IEEE, the world’s leading technical professional association for the advancement of technology, conducts the computer programming competition. IEEE student branches will host the competition on their local campuses. The 24-hour competition will begin simultaneously at college campuses around the world at 00:00:00 UTC 18 October, 2014.

This year, UPM sent 21 students to compete in the competition of which they were divided into 7 groups. The students camped at D.2.1.B  Lab during the competition. Congratulations to all Extremers!

2014 Summer School

0007Ng

IC design or Integrated circuit design is a subset of electrical engineering, the field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. IC design encompasses a particular logic and circuit design techniques which are required in designing ICs, to build an electrical network with miniaturized components. Summer school on IC design and test with the theme “Operational Amplifier” was organized as a course of lectures with the aims of upgrading the knowledge and giving a comprehensive insight of the field of Integrated Circuits and its industry to all attendees. The series of lectures offered at the summer school was presented by well-acquainted resource persons selected from universities as well as from private sector in Malaysia. At the same time it was opened to all students nationwide to join and acquire the knowledge disseminated. The program of study was organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Universiti Putra Malaysia and co-organised by IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Malaysia Chapter and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The program was funded under 2014 IEEE CASS Outreach Initiatives. The program was conducted at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It commenced with two and a half days of lectures, half a day practical session. In the full program apart from the lecture series, it contained a half a day’s tour and a ceremonial conclusion session with an award presentation to resource persons and participation certificates to all the participants.

 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TECHNICAL PROGRAM

The technical program of the event consisted of 8 lectures. The 8 lecture topics included; Overview of IC design, Overview of Manufacturing IC Automation, Overview of IC Test & Characterization, Basic Principles of Sensor, Basic Principles of Operational Amplifiers, Basic Principles of Analog to Digital Converters, Op-Amp Circuit Design and Op-Amp Parameter Test. The series of lectures were organized to fulfill the main goal of the event, upgrade the knowledge of engineering students and give an insight on what to expect in the industry once graduated. A Practical session with a couple of students per group was included to make the participants understand the practical side of the theory sessions they had in all the lectures.

Lecture 1 : Overview of IC Design (Speaker : Dr Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani, Universiti Putra Malaysia)
Lecture 2 : Overview of IC Manufacturing Automation (Speaker : Mr Mohd Adli Ahmad Bazuli, Texas Instruments)
Lecture 3 : Overview of IC Test and Characterization (Speaker : Mr Lee Yuen Tat, Intel)
Lecture 4 : Basic Principles of Sensors (Speaker : Dr Nurul Amziah Md Yunus, Universiti Putra Malaysia)
Lecture 5 : Basic Principles of Operational Amplifiers (Speaker : Dr Suhaidi Shafie, Universiti Putra Malaysia)
Project Implementation using op-amp (Venue : Lab D2.2.A)
Lecture 6 : Basic Principles of Analog to Digital Converters (Speaker : Mr Tan Kong Yew, MIMOS)
Lecture 7 : Op-Amp Circuit Design (Speaker : Assoc. Prof. Dr Tang Tong Boon, Universiti Teknologi Petronas)
Lecture 8: Op-Amp Parameter Test (Speaker : Mr Yeo Chiau Woon, Teradyne)

TOUR

It was the organizing committees’ ambition to make the event / workshop as attractive and enjoyable as possible for all participants. Thus, a tour was organized for all attendees, giving a rare opportunity for engineering students to connect with nature, while, giving a glimpse of what Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) had to offer. The tour consisted of visiting a deer park, dairy farm and a horse ranch in an area named Edu-Park, managed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). It was a guided tour where all the information was well explained by officers at the Edu Park. Transport for circling around the Edu Park in special observatory vehicles, were also provided by Edu Park of UPM.

CLOSING CEREMONY

The Closing Ceremony included a presentation of participation certificates to all the participants and was held at the La’Apprenti, Putra Restaurant at UPM. The Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Zuha Wan Hasan, invited guests and all participants and members of the organizing committee, attended the event. The Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of UPM awarded the certificates of participation to the participants. The Advisor of the program, Dr. Noor Ain Kamsani who is the Counselor of IEEE Student Branch UPM and also the Secretary of IEEE CAS Malaysia Chapter delivered the vote of thanks at the end of the session.
