Celebrating Women in Research: Unconscious Gender Bias Workshop

IEEE-WIE (Women in Engineering) Affinity Group of IEEE NSB ( Northumbria Student Branch), IET- Northumbria On Campus Group and PGR Society jointly organised a “Unconscious Gender Bias Workshop” event on Thursday, 20th February 2018 to celebrate International Women’s day 2018!

The aim of the event was to celebrate the role of women in research and to help them build confidence. The first quest speaker Prof. Rebecca focused on

‘Why diversity matters and how can we achieve it together’, by Prof Rebecca Strachan

A large gender gap still exists across the technology, engineering and physical sciences disciplines despite many initiatives to address this situation. Creating a more diverse workforce including a better gender balance is important for both academia and other organisations. There is increasing evidence that more diverse workforces are more creative and innovative and ultimately perform better and are more successful. In this session, Professor Strachan will present further evidence around this issue, and invite the audience to give their feedback and contributions on this important issue, and how we can tackle it as a collective community.

Our second quest conducted a workshop on ‘Uncounscious Bias Workshop‘, by Dr. Carol Davenport

Have you ever read an article from one of the lead researcher in your field and uncounsciously assumed it was a man? Dr. Carol Davenport will challenge us to reflect on these gender biases that we all have even if we are not aware of it and that lead us to internalise and normalise certain form of gender inequalities.

The event was organised by PhD students, Geetika Aggarwal, Chair of IEEE-WIE Northumbria Affinity Group, Sivapriya Bhagavathy, Chair IET Northumbris OCG and Kahina, President of Northumbria PGR Society. The event was supported by Prof. Krishna Busawon, Northumbria IEEE Branch Counsellor,  IET local Network,  Julia Stockdale and Kristen MacCartney IEEE-WIE (Women in Engineering).
