2020 E-Sport Day

On the 25rd until 27rd of December 2020, Engineering Students Association (PEMAJU) in collaboration with IEEE Student Branch University Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) organized an “E-SPORT DAY” which had been participated by students of faculty of engineering from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) from different departments.

 

This program is a video game application competition online among students of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Through this competition, students can build close relationships with each other in addition to building skills thinking creatively and critically.

There are 4 online games that have been held such as Mobile Legend, PES Mobile, Skribbl.io and PUBG. The program was held for three days on which it is implemented in stages according to rounds of each game. The competition was held as a tournament competition between the Departments of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Students from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department have participated in this activity. There are 2 groups of students from our department who have won the place of champion and 1st runner up in the Skribbl.io competition.

2020 School Program- Let’s Create Awesome Games with Scratch

On the 19th of December 2020, IEEE Student Branch Universiti Putra Malaysia (IEEESB
UPM) has organised a program called “Let’s Create Awesome Games with Scratch (Beginner)” which had been participated by 14 students out of 16 registered students from various primary and secondary schools. The participants were ranging from 8 until 16 years old. This program spanned for one hour and a half starting from 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. The program was presented by the instructor, Norshalisa Alis binti Zuremi and deputy instructor, Syara Haziqa binti Helmen and was supervised by Prof. Madya Dr. Noor Ain Binti Kamsani.

The objectives of this “Let’s Create Awesome Games with Scratch (Beginner)” program are to teach school students to learn basics of code programming and to encourage them to involve in hands-on session. They were also taught to create basic games through Scratch platform by coding.

The impacts of this program are participants got an overview picture on the basics of code programming and they were able to create some basic games through Scratch platform by code programming.

9a.m.– Participants were introduced to Scratch which was the platform to create their games in
this program. This introduction session was conducted for 30 minutes.

9.30a.m.- Students were taught to create their first game in a step-by-step tutorial which was “Jumping Game” for 20 minutes

9.50a.m.-Their second game which was “Shark and Fish” also for 20 minutes

10.20a.m.- Q&A session for 10 minutes to allow participants to ask the presenters regarding the tutorials for 10 minutes.

2020 Option Talk

On the 8th December 2020, IEEE Student Branch Universiti Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) has organised a “Option Talk” which had been participated by 56 students from Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Honours, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). All of the participants are from third year of Bachelor Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Honours as this was a introduction talk for them to choose their option in the coming sixth semester. The option talk was organised by the Committee member of IEEESB UPM which is the program director for this program, Tan Hooi Chee, and supervised by Dr. Haslina Binti Jaafar.

There are three speakers for this option talk which are:

1. Power engineering option talked Assoc. Prof. Dr Norhafiz Azis

2. Microelectronic engineering option talked by Assoc. Prof. Dr Suhaidi Shafie

3. Control engineering option talked by Assoc. Prof. Dr Shamsul Bahari Mohd Noor

The objectives of this “Option Talk” are to help the participants to know better about each option that should be chosen by each third-year students of Bachelor of Engineering Electrical and Electronic. The participants will be asked to fill in the option form at the end of the talk.

The impacts of this program are that participants able to increase their leadership among students in achieving a goal that has been set and foster a sense of sharing knowledge among students. The participants also be encouraged to apply the knowledge obtain a develop creatively. They are also developing a network between IEEE member for future activities.

The participants were given an introduction of the speaker and an introduction regarding the three options which are available for their choice. The participants also knew in detail about the information of three options which are power engineering option, control engineering option and microelectronic engineering option. These included the future, career and knowledge will be learnt in each option if they are choosing one of the options.

The webinar was conducted for two hours from 10am until 12pm. When the session of each option was over, there was 10 minutes of Q&A session afterwards where participants had the opportunity to ask any question regarding the option to the presenter. In conclusion, the program ran smoothly, and the participants were hoped to be able to apply the knowledge gained for them to choose their option in the upcoming semester.

2020 Internship Sharing Program

On the 7th of November 2020, IEEE Student Branch Universiti Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) has organised a webinar titled “Internship Sharing Program” which had been participated by 36 students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The webinar was organised by the Committee member of IEEESB UPM which is the program director for this program, Flora Ngu Shuh Ching, and was supervised by Dr. Hafiz Rashidi b Harun @ Ramli.

The objectives of this “Internship Sharing Program” webinar is mainly for final year students to share their experience during their internship program and give an overview to all participants. Next, resume and CV tutorial will also be conducted as a guideline when applying for internship.

The impacts of this program are participants will get an overview picture on their coming internship program and they are able to write a proper resume when applying for their internship program. Participants also received foundational knowledge about internship. Next, participants can explore career alternatives prior to graduation and develop skills in writing resume or CV.

The webinar was conducted for one hour and thirty minutes from 9am until 10.30am. Every time after each presenter finish presenting, there was a Q&A session afterwards where participants had the opportunity to ask any question regarding the topic to the presenter. In conclusion, the program ran smoothly, and the participants were hoped to be able to apply the knowledge gained for their future internship application as well as how to face the challenges during the whole application process and during internship.

The participants also learned in detail about the steps in applying for an internship. There also some exposure to some companies like My one Cooperation Subang Jaya, Texas Instrument and NPL company. And at the last 30 minutes before the program end, there are sharing program on resume and CV writing. These include the preparation of materials, submission of documents, preparation for interview, selection process before interview, and the process when they are offered the position in the company they applied to.

2020 IEEE Xtreme 14.0

IEEEXtreme 14.0 was a 24-hour worldwide programming competition and started simultaneously around the world at 00:00:00 UTC 24th October 2020. IEEE Student Branch University Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) sent two teams, which were Team PUTRA 1 and PUTRA 2 to represent the student branch to compete in IEEEXtreme 14.0. The teams were comprised of second and third year students from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Department of Computer and Communication System Engineering from University Putra Malaysia. The teams were supervised by the appointed proctor, Prof. Madya Dr. Noor ‘Ain Binti Kamsani and assisted by program director, Muhammad Syamil Aizat.

The objective of competing in IEEEXtreme 14.0 is to foster good programming techniques among undergraduates as well as to challenge them to think critically when solving real world problems using programming methods.

Due to the spread of Covid-19 and control movement order at some places, the competition was held online through online meeting platform at 8.00am. For each hour in the whole duration of the competition, new problems will be released on the competition website. Participants could solve any of the questions within 24 hours and will be graded according to the difficulty of each question. Both teams were challenged in their critical thinking and knowledge of programming language when faced with such questions. At the end of the competition, UPM teams succeeded in obtaining rankings as shown in table below.

2020 IEEE Orientation Week Briefing

During the orientation week for first year intake 2020/2021, IEEE Student Branch Universiti Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) has created a video for briefing the new intake students about the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This video was done together with the cooperation of academic staff. The video was chaired by the advisor of IEESB, Dr. Hafiz Rashidi followed by the Head of Department Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd. Khair b. Hassan for the welcome remarks, academic matters were presented by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Noor Izzri b. Abd. Wahab and ended with the IEESB committee members.

The objective of this video was to give the newly admitted first-year academic support and resources for students to be prepared for their university life. The overall message of the video was about getting familiar with the learning environment, academic standards, institution regulations and also students activities which were chaired by the President of IEESB UPM, Kok Hui Yee. A lot of emphasis was given to join the committee in order for students to gain more knowledge and experience throughout their undergraduate studies.

The impact of the video is that students will have a clearer guide in facing their days in the faculty. They will be more familiar with the new surrounding and working environment once they are back to university during face to
face classes. This video also provides them the opportunity to know their lecturers and committee members of the IEESB.

2020 Agrivoltaic Kitchen Garden

On 11th October 2020, four students from IEEE UPM has joined Maker Fair IEEE YESIST 12 with Agrivoltaic Kitchen Garden (AvKg) project. AvKg is an invention that provides the means of incorporating green energy using solar photovoltaic system and crops cultivation through the kitchen garden concept.  

The objectives of this programs are to expose the students about the innovation and technology nowadays. Maker Fair is a unique window of opportunity for the innovators, makers, creators and Tech enthusiasts to showcase their marvelous products to the international community.

Key outcomes of the events:

  • Promoting IEEE and enhancing the visibility of IEEE organization in educational activities.
  • Provide commercialization platforms as well as encourage research and innovation among universities, research institutions and industry.

This event is an international project competition established by IEEE Madras Section and IEEE Education Society to encourage the participants to come up with innovative ideas for the social and Humanitarian from 10 October until 17 October 2020. This event is held online because of Covid-19.

On 11th October 2020, UPM IEEE PES had set up a project to be shown during the online event. AvKg’s research group from the Faculty of Engineering UPM proudly presents the Agrivoltaic Kitchen Garden for IEEE YESIST 12 Maker Fair. The Agrivoltaic (AV) system is a combination of photovoltaic solar panels and plants.

2020 Youth Speak Forum

On the 22nd until 23rd of August 2020, IEEE Student Branch UPM joined as organising partner and worked with AIESEC@UPM in holding YouthSpeak Forum (YSF) 2020. This event also involved other organizations such as Youth Opportunities Malaysia, Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP) UPM, Asia Pasific University SPE Student Chapter, Computer Science Students’ Association, APU Model United Nations and Computer Science Student Association UPM (ComSSA). With the theme of Future Transformation, Youth Employment and Sustainable Impacts, the events included power talk, panel discussion and action spaces for delegates to have more interaction with speakers. 

On Day 1, Chris Randolph, President of CommTech Solutions shared with delegates the influence of action and ways to answer job interview questions. Ron Kumar, Chief Executive Officer at Sarvanta shared one of the ways which is to do research about company before attending interview.

On Day 2 of the event, Brian Lum, Jan Wong and Mohd Firdaus shared on the changes and how to identify future opportunities in this uncertainty. They emphasised the importance of having shift mindset and everyone has the ability to innovate, just that different individual has different way to innovate.

The event was receiving 200 registrations from 12 nationalities of delegation with 94% satisfaction rate reported. We sincerely thanks AIESEC@UPM for offering this opportunity for collaboration.

2020 WIE International Women’s Day Celebration

On the 9th March 2020, IEEE Student Branch University Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) in collaboration of IEEE Women In Engineering(WIESB UPM), Power & Energy Society (PES) and Persatuan Mahasiswa Fakulti Kejuruteraan (PEMAJU) had held 20th celebration of Women In Engineering Day at the foyer of Faculty Engineering, UPM. The celebration was open to all of the students from Faculty Engineering, UPM. The organizer of the celebration is Hafiza binti Hasnan and her team with 15-20 people and was supervised by Dr. Wan Fatinhamamah binti Wan Ahmad.

This event will help the participants to explore Women In Engineering (WIE), give chances to them to know about the benefits of this organisation. Indirectly, this method will provide a space for participants to get creative ideas as many as they can, through their new exposure and knowledge on WIE. This event will help the participants to obtain new motivation in their engineering course and inspire them to follow their academic interest in a career in engineering.

This activity able to help the participants to appreciate women and build up the relationship between women. The free giving of drink and food able to attract the attention of participant to visit the booth and greet “Happy Women Day” to each other. Impact of the activity is to create the opportunities to learn and explore Women In Engineering (WIE) organisation. Besides that, it also able to encourage the participants to be inspired and be hardworking to pursue their dreams in engineering field. It is also exposing students about nowadays and future engineering organisation. A network between IEEE members was developed for future activities through this celebration.

Women’s In Engineering (WIE) Malaysia had sponsored RM50 for the 20th Celebration of Women In Engineering Day.

2020 Webinar: Guide to Job Application and Interview Preparation

On the 10 th of May 2020, IEEE Student Branch Universiti Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM) has organised a webinar titled “Guide to Job Application and Interview Preparation” which had been participated by 20 students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) of different departments and faculties.

As participants came from different departments and faculties, the webinar was open to anyone who had the interest to join it to gain extra knowledge regarding the job application and interview preparation. The webinar was presented by the Chairman of IEEESB UPM, Kok Hui Yee, and was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Ain Kamsani.

The objectives of this “Guide to Job Application and Interview Preparation” webinar are to encourage students to gain knowledge on how to understand the challenges in today’s employment, to learn what to include in a resume and cover letter, and to get to know the common interview questions and how to answer them.

The webinar was conducted for an hour from 2pm until 3pm. When the session was over, there was a Q&A session afterwards where participants had the opportunity to ask any question regarding the topic to the presenter. In conclusion, the program ran smoothly, and the participants were hoped to be able to apply the knowledge gained for their future job application as well as how to face the challenges during the whole application process.

The impacts of this program are that participants had the chance to learn about the process of job application and how to be prepared if they are shortlisted to undergo for the company’s interview session. This webinar is also beneficial towards the fresh graduates as employers nowadays tend to see what can the applicants offer in terms of knowledge and soft skills that can benefit their companies.

2020 Annual General Meeting

On the 25 of February 2020, IEEE Student Branch University Putra Malaysia (IEEESB UPM), Women In Engineering (WIE) and Power & Energy Society (PES) has held an “Annual General Meeting 2020” at Dewan Kuliah 5, Faculty of Engineering which aim for recruiting new committee members.

     


The session has started with Introduction to IEEE. It was followed by Student Branch Overview, WIE and PES. Next, “Why should you join IEEE?” has been presented with testimonial and a video from Shaun Yap, former treasurer (Sep 2016 – Aug 2018). He identified the common problems that usually happened among university students like students are not career driven, lack of networking opportunity etc.

IEEE has provided him the opportunities for networking and character building. A short video to recap of events in Year 2019 has been played. A total of more than 35 events have been carried out on Year 2019.


The selection of committee members was done by voting basis where each person can vote twice. We have successfully recruited 7 new members:
