Bio: Professor Ray Zhang PhD CEng

Prof. Ray Zhang is an industrial professor (Chair of Electrical Power Systems) with School of Engineering, the University of Birmingham. He is also working as Associate Director (Energy) at Arup, UKIMEA.

Ray has worked in power industry with over 30 years’ experience. Prior to Arup Ray was the Technical Leader within the National Grid Electricity Transmission, responsible for technical policies for the “Light Current” business (incl. Protection & Automation, Telecoms, HVDC & FACTS, Cybersecurity). Following his PhD and Post Doctoral research at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, he joined National Grid (UK) as Technical Specialist in Protection and Automation. He had a number of technical and managerial positions within the company, acquired a wide spectrum of engineering expertise and leadership experience. He was the Technology Development Manager, leading a team of technical specialists to develop solutions for the reinforcement of GB transmission network, played a crucial role in design and delivery of the Hutton Series Compensation (TCSC) and Western HVDC link projects.

Throughout his career, Prof. Zhang has always been involved in technical liaison activities through professional bodies such as IET, CIGRE, Entso-e and IEC, actively promoting collaborations between academia and power industry. He is currently the chair of CIGRE UK Technical Committee, convenor of Joint WG B5C4-61 (Impact of low network inertia on Protection and Control).
