University of Birmingham Student Paper Contest (SPC) 2023

The University of Birmingham IEEE Student Branch (also the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Chapter at the University of Birmingham) will host an event: Student Paper Contest (SPC) 2023. Details are shown below:

Title: University of Birmingham Student Paper Contest (UOBSPC) 2023

Time & Date: 11:00 am – 14:00 pm, 8th November 2023

    • 11.00 am-12.30 pm: IEEE University of Birmingham Student Paper Contest 2023, Judges’ marking and prizes
    • 12.30 pm-14.00 pm: Lunch and Networking

Agenda:

 

  • Who can participate:
    •  IEEE student members and IEEE graduate student members.
    •  Normally, if you became an IEEE student member when you studied at the University of Birmingham, you will automatically get enrolled in the local IEEE Student Branch. (Not sure whether you are a student member in our student branch? Ask us via ‘Contact us’ menu and we will help check your membership)
  • Which areas of students can participate:
    •  Engineering of Undergraduates/ Master/PhD Students.
  • What kind of papers can participate:
    • Published work is excluded from the Contest.
    • Any paper subsequently published should mention of this received award.
    • Papers should cover technical and engineering aspects of a subject.
    • The work need not be original in engineering content but should be original in treatment
  • What is required for participating in the competition:
    • An abstract (maximum 100 words) and a paper (maximum 6 pages) need to be submitted by 30th October. Only IEEE student members and IEEE graduate student members are allowed to be authors of the SPC papers. Each author has to be a member of an IEEE R8 Student Branch at the time of the original submission of the paper to the Branch Contest and a member (student or not) of the IEEE at the time of the oral presentation. The work presented has to be completed before the student starts their PhD study, and the submission of the paper to the Region 8 Contest must be completed within 12 months after graduation. A doctoral thesis is not considered.
    • Once you are informed that your paper is accepted for the student paper contest, you will be asked to give a 15-minute presentation on late Nov (virtually or in person), followed by 5-10 minutes of Q&A session. Your paper and presentation will be assessed and ranked.
    • Papers should cover technical and engineering aspects of a subject reasonably within or related to the areas with which the IEEE is concerned with. The work need not be original in engineering content but should be original in treatment and concise in coverage of the author’s contribution to the subject.

  • Prize:
    • 1st: Amazon gift card (worth £80)
    • 2nd: Amazon gift card (worth £50)
    • 3rd: Amazon gift card (worth £20)

 

    • Besides, the 1st winner’s paper will be submitted to the regional Student Paper Contest to compete, and then the five finalist papers are being included in the conference proceedings as well as in IEEE Xplore Library. Electronic versions of the finalists’ papers will also be published in the IEEE Region 8 SAC web pages.
