Event Review: Distinguished Lecture – Demand-side Flexible Resource Control and Optimization

The distinguished lecture – Demand-side Flexible Resource Control and Optimization by Prof. Haochen Hua, at 14.00 pm on 4th Apr. 2024. The topic for the lecture on the theory and methods of demand side flexibility resource regulation in the power system. To response to the three major challenges, i.e., 1) strong randomness and high uncertainty of flexible resources in multiple time scales, 2) difficulty in collaborative regulation of massive flexibility resources with incompletely observable information, 3) difficulty in unleashing the response potential of differentiated flexibility resources, the theory of dynamic tracking of demand side flexibility resources under multi time scale has been innovated, an online real-time regulation method for massive demand-side flexibility resources with incompletely observable information has been proposed. A demand response incentive mechanism that balances differentiation and fairness has been established.

To kick off this event, the host, Prof Xiao-Ping Zhang, Counsellor of the University of Birmingham IEEE Student Branch, welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker, Prof. Haochen Hua to the audience.

Prof. Haochen Hua started his presentation with the following challenge:

  • Difficult to dynamically track the strong randomness and high uncertainty of demand-side flexibility resources at multiple time scales.
  • Difficultly in collaborative regulation of incomplete observable massive demand-side flexibility resources.
  • Difficult to unleash the differentiated response potential of various demand-side flexibility resources.

To address these research challenges, Prof. Haochen Hua explains the following three contributions in detail:

  • Dynamic tracking of demand side flexibility resources under multi-time scale fusion.
  • Online real-time control of massive incomplete observable demand side flexibility resources.
  • Demand side response incentive mechanism balancing differentiation and fairness.

The participants actively participated in the questions and discussions, injecting fresh ideas and innovative perspectives into the seminar. Prof. Hua patiently answered the questions of the participants and shared his views with them.
