An intra-college Game Development Competition was conducted on 28th-29th November’20, wherein enthusiastic students of IIT Goa participated and demonstrated their excellent coding and creativity skills in basic programming languages: C++, JAVA, and Python. The event was presided by Dr. Sharad Sinha, Dr. Bidyadhar Subudhi, Dr. Sujit Sahoo, and Dr. Nandakumar Nambath. The event focused on the development of console-based games where the competitors had to follow one of the three themes announced at the beginning of the event.

The game structure and the essential resources for each theme were provided and active participation was seen from students of all the branches and years. The themes for the event were:

  1. Catch me if you Can: There were two characters Joe and Ely, and Joe’s task was to collect all the coins while ensuring that Ely won’t catch him.
  2. Shoot Karo-na: In this theme, the task was to shoot the Coronavirus (represented by a symbol) which was descending down the screen from the top.
  3. Let’s Roll: This was an obstacle avoidance game in which the player(represented by a ball)  had to cross many obstacles and reach the finish line.

Participants were provided with the basic layouts and code snippets to generate maps of the games keeping the given constraints in mind. Special credits were awarded for creativity.

All the submissions were judged based on originality, creativity & innovation, design, game interface, layout, and overall gameplay experience, and the winners of the event were recognized with a Certificate of Achievement.
